IPS training for Drug & Alcohol services

The Office for Health Improvement and Disparities (OHID) have commissioned Centre for Mental Health to deliver essential training to new IPS services working in drug and alcohol treatment. The agreed courses are:


Doing What Works: Training for Employment Specialists

Delivered live online, this comprehensive course teaches how to support people into work using the IPS model

Who should undertake this course: Employment specialists, lead employment specialists & team leaders

When to undertake this course: It is recommended that delegates complete their internal induction process before attending. This allows a few weeks to acclimate to the role and understand local operations. Whilst waiting for a training date, we recommend completing this e-learning course and reading about IPS via our publication papers.


In-Field Employer Engagement

In-person training

During this half-day practical training, delegates venture into their local community with our trainer to engage with employers. The goal is to practice real-life employer interactions. Our experienced trainer provides coaching, guidance, and personalised feedback as delegates introduce themselves to actual employers in their town. The training begins with a 30-minute briefing at a local cafe, where they discuss and plan their approach. Then, it’s straight out to meet local employers along the high street.

Who should undertake this course: Employment specialists, lead employment specialists & team leaders

When to undertake this course: Recommended after 2+ months in post, one delegates have some experience of doing employer engagement.

Leading for Excellence: Training for IPS Supervisors

Delivered live online, this course teaches how to manage and develop IPS services. We recommend that delegates complete “Doing What Works” training, or have a good understanding of the IPS principles and IPS fidelity model before attending this course.

Who should undertake this course: Lead employment specialists & team leaders,

When to undertake this course: Recommended 1+ months after completing “Doing What Works” training.
