Centre for Mental Health today welcomed the Government’s announcement of a major new campaign to train a million people in England in how to look after their own mental health and that of others.
Centre for Mental Health chief executive Sarah Hughes said: “As awareness and concern about mental health is growing, the need for more of us to know how to look after our own and other people’s wellbeing has never been greater. More than half of us are likely to have a mental health difficulty during our lifetime. Getting help early can make a huge difference. Yet there are often long delays between the first signs of difficulty and getting help.
“Our research with families, for example, has found that parents want to know how to support their children’s mental health but many don’t get the right help or information. Every family, every community and every workplace can benefit from support to build mental health literacy. We hope this new campaign will complement major initiatives already under way, such as the Time to Change campaign which today celebrates its tenth anniversary of changing attitudes to mental health and challenging discrimination against people with mental health difficulties.”
