Sue Bailey begins work as chair of Centre for Mental Health

29 October 2018

Centre for Mental Health is delighted to announce Professor Dame Sue Bailey as its new Chair of Trustees, succeeding Lady Elizabeth Vallance after eight years in the role.

Sue Bailey said:

Under Elizabeth Vallance’s skilled and dedicated stewardship, Centre for Mental Health has helped to bring about an ever greater focus on mental health in society, in policy and in practice. By bringing high quality evidence to bear on policy and public debate, it has transformed our understanding of the benefits of prevention and early help, of the vital importance of tackling inequalities and of the value of co-production.

“I am thrilled to have the opportunity to follow Elizabeth as chair of the Centre and determined to build on her extraordinary legacy. Working with Sarah and her talented and committed team, I hope we can continue to make a difference to people’s lives nationwide, staying true to the Centre’s long-held principles of independence, high quality and commitment to bring about lasting social change.”

Chief executive Sarah Hughes said: “I am delighted that Sue Bailey has agreed to become Chair of Trustees at the Centre. I have enjoyed working with Elizabeth and am now looking forward to working with Sue as we continue to bring about change in policy and practice. The Centre’s work has never been more important. While we are now seeing pledges of greater investment in NHS mental health services, we know we need to ensure it is spent wisely and used well. We also need to see investment in public health and social care, in housing, employment and criminal justice reform. And we urgently need to see effective action to reduce mental health inequalities.”
