Left Behind: A policy response to cardiovascular inequalities and severe mental illness

Equally Well UK, in collaboration with the British Heart Foundation, invites you to an online event to launch a new briefing on cardiovascular disease (CVD) and severe mental illness (SMI).

Date: Friday 16th October 2026
Time: 12.00pm – 1.00pm
Joining details: MS Teams (a link will be sent following sign-up)

People living with severe mental illness (SMI) are around four times more likely to die early from cardiovascular disease (CVD) than the general population. Yet the significant inequalities experienced by people living with SMI are often overlooked in policy and healthcare. A new briefing by British Heart Foundation draws on a review of the available evidence, conversations with people with lived experience, and engagement with academic and clinical experts.

The briefing highlights the practical policy action needed to improve the prevention, diagnosis and treatment of CVD for people living with SMI. It sets out how policies that address the disproportionate burden of CVD among people living with SMI could help reduce inequalities in life expectancy and ensure people receive the care and support they need.

During the webinar, you will:
  • Hear from someone with lived experience about the barriers and challenges of accessing appropriate cardiovascular care.
  • Learn about the key findings and recommendations from the new briefing.
  • Consider what NHS trusts and healthcare systems can do in practice to address these inequalities.
  • Hear about examples of good practice and consider how these approaches could be applied more widely.

Please sign up to attend below.

Please note this webinar is open to members only, but please do share this invite with your colleagues. If you have any questions, please get in touch with shizana.arshad@centreformentalhealth.org.uk.
