About this course

Individual Placement and Support (IPS) has been internationally recognised for over two decades as the most effective method of supporting people with severe mental illness into sustainable, competitive employment. Following successful UK trials, IPS is now the preferred model for supporting clients in drug & alcohol services to gain and sustain employment.

Aimed at new employment specialists, this comprehensive course will help you to set up an effective IPS service and support people with severe mental illness or drug and alcohol addiction into paid work using the IPS model.

This fun and interactive course is delivered in small groups of up to 16 delegates where everyone gets involved. We use a mixture of presentation, group work, discussion, breakout rooms, polls, and homework.

The training will cover:

  • The 8 principles of IPS
  • Marketing the IPS service
  • The research evidence for the effectiveness of IPS
  • Working with the treatment teams to obtain referrals
  • Integrating the treatment and employment teams
  • Providing benefits advice
  • Vocational profiling and ongoing assessment
  • Vocational action planning with the service user
  • Collaborating with other employment agencies
  • Developing relationships with potential employers
  • Job carving
  • Overcoming barriers to employment
  • Disclosure
  • Providing on-going support for the employer and the service user
  • Case studies
  • Overcoming local challenges and issues
  • Ongoing personal development as an employment specialist

“Flawless training! Really fun & easy to learn!”

“The course was really interactive and both course trainers were great between the two of them. They kept the course very engaging and were very helpful and knowledgeable and had the patience to answer all of our questions in detail whenever we had one in mind. They turned a very comprehensive IPS framework into an easy learnable format and has really boosted our confidence”
