At any one time in the UK, on average 1 worker in 6 will be experiencing depression, anxiety or problems related to distress. This proportion actually goes up to 1 in 5 if you include alcohol and drug dependence.
Of the large numbers of people experiencing depression and anxiety fewer than a quarter (24%) seek and receive treatment and amongst those with an alcohol or drug dependence the figures are even lower – less than 13%.
For UK employers the total cost of mental health problems per employee every year averages at £1,035; mainly through reduced productivity and absenteeism. Frequently employer awareness of mental health issues at work is extremely poor but effective programmes which manage mental health at work can save around 30% of these costs.
