Whose Values?

A Workbook for Values-Based Practice

People's values differ enormously - what may be important to one individual may be of little significance to another.

Mental health workers face conflicting pressures every day in meeting the demands of diverse values in their practice. An ability to understand a service user's values is a fundamental skill for those working in mental health care. Only by learning what a person values, and knowing what clashes of values exist around them, will they be able to help service users and their families adequately.

This new workbook provides a series of exercises that enable practitioners to reflect on the way that they work and recognise the influence that different values have on their practice. It will enable them to:

  • Have a clearer understanding of how values are defined
  • Determine the role of values in relationship to facts
  • Appreciate the implication of diverse values in everyday practice
  • Understand some of the ways in which values become hidden
  • Apply these insights to work with service users and clinical practice

It provides tools for working positively to resolve these conflicts and develop 'capable practice'.

This workbook is an essential resource that can be used for continuing professional development.
